Resource:
On-Demand Onboarding and Orientations

Forward-thinking firms are leveraging online orientations to expand the breadth and the experiences offered through their onboarding programs, and to further brand and solidify their firm as the “right choice” for the new hire. Many firms are beginning to use online orientations as a “pre-boarding” activity – engaging new hires well before their first day on the job – thus enabling the use of face time on the first day in a more engaging, productive, and inviting way to leave a more positive, lasting first impression of the firm.

Firms are covering a full range of topics online. While some firms have taken content from nearly every portion of orientation and placed it online, others are currently using the online portion to simply introduce the new hire to the firm.

Any information that tends to be repetitive from one orientation session to the next is a prime candidate for an online approach. Similarly, any important information that is unlikely to be shared consistently from one in-person orientation session to another is also a strong candidate.

At a minimum, most online orientation programs include video clips from the firm’s leadership – allowing the new hire an opportunity to be introduced to these individuals and hear directly from them, which is often difficult to arrange consistently in live orientation sessions. They also include overviews of firm policies, procedures, committees, departments, and other structural information and guidance, with direct links to supporting information on the firm’s intranet site.
