Is Managing a Hybrid Team the Same as Managing a Remote One?

Charlie is leading a new hybrid team. On any given day, some members of his team are working in the office while others are working off-site.

Leading teams is nothing new for Charlie. He has successfully led a team in the office for years. He adeptly managed his team when everyone worked remotely, too. But Charlie he has a sense that leading a hybrid team will be different from both of his previous experiences. He recognizes the many benefits of a hybrid work arrangement and knows that his team members value the flexibility that the hybrid model allows. But he realizes that there will be new challenges, too.

Now let's meet Mandy. She is joining a team that will be working hybrid. She and her colleagues will have the flexibility to split their time between working in the office and working remotely.

Mandy is used to working in an office environment near her manager, firm leaders, and colleagues, so working hybrid is a new concept for her. She’s familiarized herself with the latest hybrid work policy and guidelines established by her organization—and the guidelines at her team level … but she’s still got several questions on her mind:

  • What can she do to remain visible and top of mind for her managers and colleagues?

  • What can she do to showcase her contributions and value—and keep her career on track?

  • And how can she maintain and nurture important connections and relationships?

Mandy is wise to be thinking about these questions.

If you’re a manager like Charlie—or a team member like Mandy—it’s smart for you to be thinking about these questions, too.

In many ways, leading a hybrid team is different than leading a team that is entirely in the office or entirely remote.

And, if you’re a member of a hybrid team, there are specific actions you can take to remain visible, valued, and connected.

That's why we created the Hybrid Work Series, a targeted on-demand learning series that provides practical tips for both lawyers and staff to maximize both individual and team success.
